The York RI2 team opened their season last night with a lovely sunset drive out to Thornton Le Dale.
What was always going to be a tough game playing a team that was in Div4 last year ended up being a closely fought 2-3 defeat. Given they played their top 4 nominated players, we had 3 players making their team squash debuts, and Arnab was playing only his 3rd match, I’d say that’s a strong result 💪
Arnab made a great start, controlling his match to cruise to a 3-0 win.
Really tough game for Jake (playing with a borrowed racket after an unfortunately timed string break) against a very tidy opponent. Some great shots, and kept in the games really well, but squeezed out for a 3-0 defeat.
Chris Taylor (our self-nominated elder statesmen 😉) found his relentlessness was unfortunately outmatched 3-0 by youth.
Lewis Chadderton won 3-1 with some unorthodox yet unmanageable returns and great short play. (Also, thanks for subbing in for me).
A very competitive final game but unfortunately James went down 3-0. Some great squash, and the games ebbed and flowed, but their Captain Paul is a very good player.
Overall a really strong showing, a couple of great wins, good play all round, and lots of positives and experience to take from many players’ first matches.
Plus it was just a generally fun evening with a great bunch of people.
Looking forward to the rest of the season. Just a shame we’ve probably not got as good a post-match meal to look forward to, (the curry was great!)
